We’re Back!!

Hello!

It has been a bit, a few months, but we are still snapping our shutter & sharing our photos. This year we start a few challenges to expand our photography skills.

In January we started the Dogwood Challenge, which is 52 weeks of doing a new challenge every week. So far, we have been able to keep this up, we are just finishing up week 14! This weeks challenge was Vision: Diptych or Triptych- Connect 2 or 3 images together, creating one image, to provoke a thought or tell a story.

henry triptych

Melanie: My favorite Challenge so far has been the Triptych. I really liked the creative process of the challenge, from coming up with an idea, shooting and processing the images to flow in a cohesive way. I chose the Jeep for my triptych because I like photographing jeeps and it was an opportunity to create a piece of art, and really showcase the Jeep  in a different way.Race Jeep triptych 1

Melanie’s Dogwood Challenge submissions:

Melanie: My least favorite challenge, was the macro. I did not share my image that submitted for this challenge here. Macro shots frustrate me. I have a very painful time getting the right focus. I would just rather not shoot them. That is a good thing about these challenges, I am learning a lot, about technique, creativity, composition and vision.

Then we decided that one challenge wasn’t enough! So we committed to a second 52 week challenge, 52Frames.com We started this challenge at week 9.

Melanie: My favorite challenge with 52Frames has been the Black and White Challenge. In this challenge I had to shoot in monochrome. I will admit I really liked this, I was able to ‘see’ the image better. It was very helpful, in fact, I am still shooting in monochrome 90% of the time.

Melanie: My least favorite from this challenge, has been Sky Challenge, only because I wanted to submit for the extra credit, which was astrophotography shot, and it was overcast every night that week. I was unsuccessful at getting a clear star shot, I did get a nice airplane trail. LOL!!

See what I mean…not the best.

from Thankful November ~ to Joyful December…

Here at Two Strangers Photography, we had a great Thanksgiving Holiday, between the two of us there is an abundance for us to be grateful for… our families, our friendships, our health, our country…

I am so thankful for the opportunity I have to share my photos with others, and so incredibly blessed to have an amazing friend & photography/blog partner, Jeff. It is so crazy to think that we didn’t even know each other a year ago. And here we are writing a blog together, coordinating photo shoots…We were even able to spend a day jeeping together with my family this past Thanksgiving. It was fun to take Jeff out in the jeep his first time rock crawling & my first time driving. Luckily, we both survived!

As we move into the new year, Two Strangers Photography would like to continue sharing our photos, we would also like to share more photos from other amazing people too. If you are interested in us sharing your photos please email us here and tag us on instagram #twostrangersphotography. We love to find beauty in all things… and are interested to see others perspectives on beauty in everything.

We also love to challenge ourselves, because we are a lot bit crazy! Jeff doesn’t know about this yet…it will be his early christmas surprise!! I think for the rest of December we should challenge each other to photograph and post things that bring us “peace or/and joy”.  The last two weeks of November we did things that we were “thankful” for. I think this one will really stretch the imagination. Please join us, #twostrangersphotography.

We will start featuring posts on our instagram page @twostrangersphotography January 1st.

*If you have an idea for a photo challenge that you would like to see us post and participate in please feel free to share it with us.

Please scroll through the photos and enjoy things that we are thankful for….

This week Melanie had this great idea of a challenge of Macro shots. It has been fun and we both have been trying to think outside the box on this. Here are a few of the results.

Keep shooting and sharing

Peace my friends

Trick or Treat?

It is a trick, but a treat to look at…

We had some fun this last week creating some spooky, haunted looking houses with Lightroom edits. We took some photos of regular looking houses in the avenues of Salt Lake City, and got a little creative in Lightroom. We also found some other things to photograph along the way this week that we did not edit…they were already spooky. Can you tell the difference?DSC_2455-01DSC_2468-01DSC_2503-01DSC_2521-01DSC_5784-02IMG_20171023_195820_280DSC_2541

The Challenge this week was to work on black and white photos, to improve our skills…well, I think Jeff really won this challenge hands down! He killed it! In every one of his photo! I need some more practice with staying on task (I over think my edits and feel they look better in color, even though I love everyone else’s black and whites!). It is a good thing this is a work in progress…

This next week…is going to be a surprise!

The adventure continues…

Let us know if you have an idea for a challenge or if there is something you would like us to explore….we would love to hear from you.

Where does the time go?

Holy Cow, it is crazy how fast time fly’s. We are going to go back in time now that the instameet is a pleasant memory. A huge shout out to our sponsors  @baby_jeep_racing @interstatebait @hobohammocks @utahlake @bali_wear and everybody who made time to join us. We made some new friends and renewed old acquaintances. The best part is the photographers we get to go shoot with. Our goal is have a great time, laugh a lot, be silly, and hopefully get some amazing shots. (In that order)

It seems we get going on one project when something new and fun catches our eyes. So we have decided to concentrate on just two areas of photography for a while. Ok 1 area Night Shots, but mostly light painting (which we are still in the infant stages of learning) and Steelwool spinning (which we learn something new each time we go out). We have a new orb lights to play with and soon a new LED light saber. We are excited to get inv.olved in this fun hobby.

Here are a couple of recent night outings. Thanks to @whatiseefrom here @allington_adventues for their creative spinning and to @emmalouallington for showing up to be our model and getting Jeff out of the pictures.

Melanie and me have challenged each other to keep improving our Black n White Photography…

Check out more of our work on Instagram… @uncle_egghead_photography or @mamojeep_photography

Our challenge to you is to get out at night, get creative and make some incredible memories and please share your pictures we us. We love to highlight your shots and share them with our followers. Questions feel free to contact Jeff or Melanie at twostrangersphotography@gmail.com or on Instagram… @uncle_egghead_photography or @mamojeep_photography

Peace my friends

This fall here in Utah we have been blessed with an incredible show of colors. From the Skyline Drive to the Nebo Loop and all the Canyons we are surrounded by, this Autumn has been truly amazing. The above photo I took in American Fork Canyon near Silver Flat Reservoir. Melanie and myself (along with thousands of others) have had the chance to capture some beautiful pictures of this lovely area we live.

The fun part of autumn shooting can be thinking outside the box as these next two pictures show a couple of ideas just to have some more fun creating.

The top shot Melanie took a shot of only the reflections of fall showing on the surface of the water.

The bottom shot I took of some Quaking Aspen using motion. To do this I put the camera on continuous burst and moved it back and forth as I held the shutter down. You can also move it up and down for some other fun results.

Please feel free to send us some of your favorite fall shots and we will feature them next week. Until then peace my friends and keep shooting.

What a great weekend..

Last Friday night and 12+ hours on Saturday, Melanie and me had the privilege of attending a workshop hosted by @Photogadventures and @Photopills. The workshop was on using the Photopills app to plan your astrophotography outings. Photopills is amazing. We were taught how to scout out new areas using Google Earth and then with Photopills planning exactly the time and place the Milky Way will be located in relationship to your foreground subject to within a few feet. Want to know when the core will appear under Delicate Arch? Photopills can tell you the date and time that will happen. Wonder when the Golden Hour begins and ends in a month from now. Photopills has the answers. Photopills Developer Rafael Pons was our instructor. We were blown away with the details you can plan using the app. I am so excited to use it for my Yellowstone trip next month.

Saturdays session included a few more lessons from Rafael. Then we had some great classes from the @Photogadventures guys. Brendon Porter and Aaron King are so refreshing in their easygoing teaching style. Aaron’s lesson on Composition was amazing, sharing ideas I had never heard before. Check out @photogadventures on Instagram and their website. Tons of really good classes and weekly live podcasts. After class we all took a short road trip to the Wedge Overlook in Emery County. We hoped for Sunset and Milky Way shots however Mother Nature had completely another idea. Heavy clouds were greeting us and we waited a couple of hours but sadly the clouds never thinned out enough for amazing MW shots but it was so enjoyable to meet and spend time with some new photographers.

Here are a few shots Mel and I took.

Photographer in the Spotlight…

This week our featured IGer is @epaulsmith…

We are so happy he has chosen to share his work with us and we recommend you give him a follow for some daily inspiration. We are thrilled to share a few of his pieces here on Two Strangers Photography.

All time favorite photo from Jeff…

The False Kiva

This is my most favorite photograph I’ve taken. This was a hike that was tougher than I thought it would be. (Probably shouldn’t of done it) But the reward of completing it was way more than I could imagine. To be at the Kiva was an incredible feeling. I was moved by being in a sacred place where the Indians worshiped and prayed. The more time I spent there the better the sky and lighting became. All in all, a day I don’t think I’ll ever forget. ~Jeff

All time favorite photo from Melanie…

sunrise at lp Sunrise at Lake Powell

This was taken early in the morning… I had just woken up, sitting there by myself contemplating the universe…(just kidding I was rubbing the sleep from eyes), it only last a split second, but I caught the magic! I love Lake Powell, it never disappoints. I have never witnessed another sunrise as spectacular as this one. I love photography and sharing my moments with everyone. ~Melanie @mamojeep_photography

Here at Two Strangers Photography, we thought it might be nice if we add a little learning lessons to our blog. We pick up things from here, there and everywhere. Sometimes, or more accurately we picked these up the hard the way…after the frustrating chaos…not before. We like to have hands on learning or learn by “oh snap, what just happened!”  Yep! that is how it usually works for Jeff and I. We mess up and then take the next 3 days to figure out how to un-mess it!!

Learning Lesson Tip:

*ALWAYS format your memory card in the camera when you want to empty the card. Never delete images on the card individually, or through your computer.

*The only way to improve your photography is to get out there and snap that shutter.

*Get creative & experiment, play with different f-stops and shutter speeds. See what kind of magic you can capture!

*Challenge yourself & find inspiration from others.

Thank you for stopping by…let us know what you think, we would love to hear from you!

Get out there and snap that shutter!

Lightroom Dashboard & the 50mm Challenge…

In our efforts to improve our photography, be inspired & motivated to expand our photography horizons. We stumbled upon LR Dashboard… www.lightroomdashboard.com
I learned that my lens of choice is 18-55mm, f-3.5-5.6: 50% of my photos are taken over the past 6 months have been with this lens. Jeff’s analysis turned up with the 18-250mm, f-5.6: 66% as his all time favorite.
Having found out this useful information, we started discussing how it is so easy to get into a rut with our shooting. Jeff came up with a challenge to use a lens that we are NOT particularly fond of, and shoot with that lens for and entire week. We typically shoot several times a week or several times a day.  We decided that the 50mm is the winner for this challenge. Hopefully, we won’t throw our camera’s against a rock or toss them in the lake. Wish us the best of luck.
We will run another analysis in 6 months and see if we are spreading our time evenly between our lens or if that is just the way we want to shoot. Or we might find another challenge hidden in the data.

**Try it out! We would love to hear your about your results. Also, if you would like to join us in this weeks challenge, we would love to see what you create with the 50mm lens. We would be honored to feature your photos here on twostrangersphotography.

Last week Jeff wrote about Perseid Meteor Shower. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy night, so Jeff was unable to shoot the Meteor Shower. However, he did get some pretty amazing shots! Take a look!
I was MIA for the meteor shower but here are a few photos that I took last week when Jeff and I went out on a photo-drive-about.
